The municipal council election in 1960 took place on April 10, 1960 and was the third municipal council election in St. Pölten after the end of the war. The Socialist Party of Austria was able to unite the most votes in spite of severe losses, but lost the absolute majority .

Starting position

In the election of April 24, 1955 , the SPÖ was able to unite the most votes and gain an absolute majority with slight gains . While the electoral community of the Austrian People's Opposition , an electoral community made up of the Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) and the Left Social Party , lost a lot of votes, the ÖVP made gains.

Wilhelm Steingötter resigned as district chairman in 1959, but remained mayor. In the following months, a successor was sought who, in Rudolf Singer, was not found until the end of February.

Campaigning parties and election process

In the elections, the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) joined the three parties already represented in the municipal council . The Socialist Party of Austria (SPÖ) ran with the new district chairman Rudolf Singer as the top candidate, the previous mayor Wilhelm Steingötter was not available for any further election. The ÖVP competed under Andreas Buchberger, the KPÖ under Franz Käfer .

Election result

In the election of April 10, 1960, the SPÖ was again able to unite the most votes, but the absolute majority could not be held due to the heavy losses . While the ÖVP and KPÖ gained slightly votes, the FPÖ received 4.6% of the vote when they first took office.
