Rudolf Singer (born May 30, 1907 in Vienna , † April 3, 1979 in St. Pölten ) was an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ), member of the National Council and 28th Mayor of St. Pölten.

Life

Rudolf Singer was born in Vienna on May 30, 1907. He joined the Social Democratic Labor Party as early as 1924 and became a youth functionary in a hometown, during which time he worked as an elevator fitter. As a member of the banned socialists, he was briefly arrested in 1934 at the Wöllersdorf detention center .

After the Second World War , Singer was sent by Oskar Helmer to St. Pölten as party secretary in order to rebuild the party structures. In 1949 he was elected to the National Council, of which he was a member until 1960. He was then a member of the Federal Council until 1970 .

After the municipal council elections in 1960 he was elected mayor of St. Pölten, and in the municipal council elections in 1965 he was re-elected with strong votes. During his tenure, the indoor swimming pool was built and Europaplatz was redesigned. His tendency towards individual decisions and the related internal party criticism led to his resignation from the mayor's office after the municipal council elections in 1970 and to a five-year ban on the function of the federal party in 1968. He died on April 3, 1979 in St. Pölten.
