1965

The municipal council election in 1965 took place on April 4, 1965 and was the fourth municipal council election in St. Pölten after the end of the war. The Socialist Party of Austria won strongly, was again able to unite the most votes and win back the absolute majority .

Starting position

In the election of April 10, 1960 , the SPÖ was able to unite the most votes despite heavy losses, but they were unable to hold an absolute majority . While the KPÖ and the ÖVP recorded slight gains, the FPÖ received 4.6 percent of the vote when they first took office.

Wilhelm Steingötter resigned as mayor after the election in favor of the list leader Rudolf Singer . Singer was elected mayor with the votes of the SPÖ and FPÖ.

Campaigning parties and election process

The four parties represented in the municipal council ran for the elections. The Socialist Party of Austria (SPÖ) ran under Mayor Rudolf Singer as the top candidate, while the ÖVP ran under Andreas Buchberger. The previous list leader of the KPÖ Franz Käfer died in 1962.

Election result

In the election of April 4, 1965, the SPÖ was again able to unite the most votes and, due to the strong profits, recaptured the absolute majority . While the ÖVP easily won votes, the KPÖ and the FPÖ lost heavily, the latter could no longer hold council seats.

Effects

At the constituent meeting of the municipal council on April 23, 1965, Singer was unanimously elected mayor , while Engelbert Laimer (SPÖ) and Andres Buchberger (ÖVP) remained vice-mayors. After internal party disputes, Singer was punished by the SPÖ in 1968 with a five-year ban, which is why he was only mayor without SPÖ party functions for the last year and a half of his tenure.
