The municipal council election in 1950 took place on May 7, 1950 and was the first municipal council election in St. Pölten after the end of the war. Despite slight losses, the Socialist Party of Austria was able to unite the most votes and win an absolute majority . The municipal council elections in 1950 marked a new beginning in the city's political history; for the first time since 1934, the municipal council as well as the city senate and mayor were filled according to the will of the voters.

Starting position

After the city was taken by the Red Army, Günther Benedikt , a 23-year-old iron merchant, was appointed the first post-war mayor by the Russian city commander on April 16, 1945 . On May 16 of the same year he passed the office on to the experienced Franz Käfer . The first municipal council consisted of ten MPs from the KPÖ and SPÖ, while the ÖVP provided six members. After the National Council election in 1945 in December of the same year, he resigned from office to allow a new formation to be made possible for this election. Wilhelm Steingötter had clearly won this with the SPÖ. However, the occupying power neither accepted the election result nor the resignation, and Käfer remained in office.

Campaigning parties and election process

In the elections, the three parties previously represented in the municipal council ran. The Socialist Party of Austria (SPÖ) ran with Wilhelm Steingötter as the top candidate, the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) sent Anton Buchberger into the race. The Left Bloc (LB), an electoral community made up of the Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) and the Left Social Party , ran under the incumbent mayor, Franz Käfer .

Most of the election campaign was fought between the left bloc and the SPÖ. The main topic, besides Austria-wide topics such as the future of the state, was above all the legitimacy of the incumbent mayor.

Election result

In the election of May 7, 1950, the SPÖ was able to unite the most votes and win an absolute majority , despite slight losses in the last election . While the ÖVP lost votes, the left-wing bloc gained relatively strong gains, and St. Pölten had a number of large USIA operations.
