Local council election in St. Pölten 1955

The municipal council election in 1955 took place on April 24, 1955 and was the second municipal council election in St. Pölten after the end of the war. The Socialist Party of Austria was able to unite the most votes and achieve an absolute majority with a slight gain in votes.
Starting position
In the election of May 7, 1950 , the SPÖ was able to unite the most votes and win an absolute majority , despite slight losses in the last election . While the ÖVP lost votes, the left bloc gained relatively strong gains. Shortly before the election, in January 1955, the city area was reduced in size following a decision by the Province of Lower Austria. The 14 cadastral parishes that had been gelled out had a total area of over 26 km², but only 1,640 inhabitants.
Campaigning parties and election process
In the elections, the three parties previously represented in the municipal council ran. The Socialist Party of Austria (SPÖ) ran with Wilhelm Steingötter as the top candidate, the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) sent Anton Buchberger into the race. The Electoral Community of the Austrian People's Opposition (VO), an electoral community made up of the Austrian Communist Party (KPÖ) and the Left Social Party , ran under Franz Käfer .
Election result
In the election of April 24, 1955, the SPÖ was again able to unite the most votes and achieve an absolute majority with slight gains . While the VO lost a lot of votes, the ÖVP gained profits.

Effects
Wilhelm Steingötter was re-elected Mayor of St. Pölten , Andreas Buchberger from the ÖVP and Wenzel Kaska from the SPÖ remain his deputies. After Kaska's death in 1956, Engelbert Laimer held the post of Vice Mayor. Of the eleven city councilors, the SPÖ provided six, the ÖVP four and the VO one.
