Local council election in St. Pölten 1972
The 1972 municipal council election took place on March 19, 1972 and was the sixth municipal council election in St. Pölten after the end of the war. Despite losses, the Socialist Party of Austria was again able to unite the most votes and defend the absolute majority .
Starting position
In the election of April 5, 1970 , the SPÖ was able to unite the most votes and defend the absolute majority with strong profits . While the ÖVP lost votes slightly and the KPÖ lost a lot of votes, the FPÖ recorded slight gains, but they did not make it into the local council.
On January 1, 1972, numerous localities in St. Pölten were incorporated , including today's districts of Pottenbrunn , Ratzersdorf an der Traisen and St. Georgen am Steinfelde . As the population increased by almost 7,000, a new council was elected less than two years after the last election.
Campaigning parties and election process
The four parties represented in the municipal council ran for the elections. The Socialist Party of Austria ran with Hans Schickelgruber as the top candidate, the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) under Anton Korner.
Election result
In the election of March 19, 1972, the SPÖ was again able to unite the most votes and defend the absolute majority with losses. ÖVP, KPÖ and FPÖ recorded slight gains, the FPÖ managed to re-enter the local council.

Effects
At the constituent meeting of the municipal council on April 12, 1972, Schickelgruber was elected mayor , while Oswald Hameder (SPÖ) and Anton Korner (ÖVP) were again deputy mayors.
