Election to the municipal council in St. Pölten in 1986
The 1986 municipal council election took place on November 23, 1986 at the same time as the 1986 national council election and was the ninth municipal council election in St. Pölten after the end of the war. The Socialist Party of Austria achieved its best result so far and was able to defend the absolute majority .
Starting position
In the election of March 14, 1982 , the SPÖ was again able to unite the most votes and defend the absolute majority with slight losses . ÖVP and KPÖ suffered slight losses, the FPÖ was able to win an additional mandate from the ÖVP with significant gains. In 1983, in an amendment to the municipal council election regulations, a flying election commission was introduced for the first time , enabling bedridden people to cast their votes. In the same amendment, people were entitled to vote at their second home. In March 1986 St. Pölten was elected the capital of Lower Austria .
After Jörg Haider became federal party leader of the FPÖ, Franz Vranitzky dissolved the coalition, and there were new national council elections . The original election date would have been planned for March 1987, but the city of St. Pölten joined this date at short notice for cost reasons.
Campaigning parties and election process
The four parties represented in the municipal council and the Green Alternative Citizens List (GABL) competed in the elections . The Socialist Party of Austria (SPÖ) ran with Willi Gruber as the top candidate, the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) under Josef Kimmeswenger. The Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) was led by Ludwig Marzi. The Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) split shortly before the election, the previous mayor Erich Mahrer resigned from the party and founded the Green Alternative Citizens List . Because of the name, all the Greens in the city and Freda Meissner-Blau distanced themselves from the list. Erwin Pawel was the new top candidate of the FPÖ.
Election result
In the election of November 23, 1986, the SPÖ achieved strong profits, achieved its best election result and was able to defend an absolute majority. While the ÖVP lost slightly, the FPÖ and KPÖ suffered heavy losses. The FPÖ barely achieved a mandate, the KPÖ narrowly failed to return to the municipal council.
