Local council election in St. Pölten 1919
The municipal council election in 1919 took place on June 22, 1919 and was the first municipal council election in St. Pölten after the end of the war. The Social Democratic Workers' Party of German Austria won the election, was able to unite the most votes for the first time and achieved an absolute majority .
Starting position
After the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy , the municipal council under Mayor Karl Heitzler remained in office for the time being . On May 10, 1919, the election of all municipal councils for Lower Austria , with the exception of the statutory cities of Waidhofen an der Ybbs , Vienna and Wiener Neustadt , was announced. At the time of the election, St. Pölten was not yet a statutory town. The urban area consisted of the current cadastral community of St. Pölten.
There were some changes in this election compared to previous elections. This was the first St. Pölten municipal council election with the right to vote for women , the number of councilors was 42.
Campaigning parties and election process
The Social Democratic Workers 'Party of German Austria (SDAPDÖ) under Hubert Schnofl , the Christian Social Party (CS) under Franz Haumer, the German Nationalist Party (DVP) under Johann Lechnitz and the German National Socialist Workers' Party (DNAP) under Josef Stockhammer competed in the elections .

In the election of June 22, 1919, the SDAPDÖ was able to unite the most votes and win an absolute majority .

Effects
On July 11, 1919, the newly elected municipal council met for its constituent session. It was Hubert Schnofl selected abstention, with 41 of the 42 voices mayor. Franz Peer (SDAPDA) was elected first Vice Mayor and Johann Wohlmeyer (CS) was elected second Vice Mayor .
