Johann Wohlmeyer
Johann Wohlmeyer (born September 14, 1850 in St. Pölten ; † March 8, 1932 there ) was an Austrian master builder and politician ( CSP ), a member of the Lower Austrian state parliament and the Reichsrat, and a member of the provisional national assembly .
Life
Johann Wohlmeyer was born on September 14, 1850 in St. Pölten. His family had been running a construction company in the city since 1840. After he had passed his master builder exam, he worked in the family business. In addition to the Sacred Heart Church, he also built part of the Harlander Coats complex . He was also responsible for the renovation of the Grand Hotel Pittner and the St. Pölten town hall .
Wohlmeyer got involved in politics early on. He was a long-time member of the St. Pölten municipal council, founded the “Christian workers' association St. Pölten” and was a member of other Christian social associations. In 1896 he defeated the previous member of the Lower Austrian Landtag, Hermann Ofner , the following year he was elected to the Reichsrat , of which he was a member until 1918 ( IX , XI , XI and XII legislative periods ).
His bitterest opponent, both in the municipal council and in the Reichsrat, was Wilhelm Voelkl . After Voelkl defeated him in the state elections in 1902, Wohlmeyer succeeded the following year in repealing the community committee and dismissing Voelkl as mayor, with a government commissioner taking care of the official business. With a triumphant election victory Voelkl finally returned to the mayor's office in 1904.
From October 21, 1918 to February 16, 1919 he was a member of the Provisional National Assembly . After leaving the National Assembly, he retired and died on March 8, 1932 in his hometown.
Wohlmeyer was the uncle of Heinrich and Julius Raab .
