history

The town hall seen from the east in 1908

The first mention of the town hall can be found in a document in 1503: "... a house on the Breiten Markt [today's town hall square] has been bought as a common town to become a town hall ..." The house bought at that time was only the eastern half of today's one Baus. The western half was acquired in 1567 and connected to the present building in the following years. The facade has been standardized so that the former division can no longer be recognized. The octagonal town hall tower, which originally served as a granary and armory , was completed in 1591.

The town hall received its current baroque appearance in the first half of the 18th century. In 1727 Joseph Munggenast redesigned the facade. The mayor's room, the former council chamber, in it above all the imperial ceiling with the medallion portraits of the Roman-German emperors of Friedrich III. until Charles VI. was designed in 1722. The onion dome was erected between 1750 and 1775.

The coat of arms decorations from the former Kremser and Wienertor were added after they were razed.

Over time, the town hall had numerous functions. It housed the city scales, the salt office and the bread tables. Later the first fire station, garages for the rescue as well as the library, the museum and the city prison were located in the town hall.

During renovation work on the west facade, a sgraffito area from the late 14th century was exposed.
