2006

The 2006 municipal council election took place on October 8, 2006 and was the 13th regular municipal council election in St. Pölten after the end of the war. With strong profits, the Social Democratic Party of Austria was again able to unite the most votes and defend the absolute majority .

Starting position

In the election of October 7, 2001 , the SPÖ was again able to unite the most votes and defend the absolute majority despite losses . The ÖVP made strong gains, as did the Greens. These were able to overtake the FPÖ, which had to accept massive losses, and reached third place. The Liberal Forum - near list Otto Schwarz and the KPÖ did not make it into the municipal council.

Shortly after the election, Hermann Nonner and the other FPÖ councilors resigned from the party and then founded the list for St. Pölten . They remained as free mandataries in the municipal council, so the FPÖ was no longer represented.

In 2004, Willi Gruber surprisingly resigned as mayor and appointed Matthias Stadler as his successor.

Campaigning parties and election process

In the elections, the three parties represented in the municipal council, the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) as well as the list Hermann Nonner (Nonner), the Justice Party Austria (GPÖ) and the list Mehmet Isik (ISIK) competed.

The Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) ran for the first time with Matthias Stadler as the top candidate, the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) sent Johannes Sassmann into the race. The FPÖ's top candidate was Peter Sommerauer, while the Greens - The Green Alternative (GREEN) were led by Silvia Buschenreiter. The lists Hermann Nonner and Mehmet Isik came under their namesake, the GPÖ under Alfred Altmann.

Election result

In the election of October 8, 2006, the SPÖ won strongly, once again won the most votes and defended the absolute majority . FPÖ and ÖVP suffered losses, the Greens remained almost stable. Nonner was able to move into the municipal council when he first took office, which was denied to the remaining lists and parties.
