Local council election in St. Pölten 1991
The local council election in 1991 took place on October 6, 1991 and was the tenth local council election in St. Pölten after the end of the war. The Social Democratic Party of Austria was able to unite despite slight losses most votes overall majority defend.
Starting position
In the election of November 23, 1986 , the SPÖ was again able to win the most votes in clubs and achieve its best result and defend the absolute majority with strong profits . While the ÖVP lost slightly, the FPÖ and KPÖ suffered heavy losses. The FPÖ barely achieved a mandate, the KPÖ narrowly failed to return to the municipal council.
Campaigning parties and election process
The three parties represented in the municipal council, as well as the Green Alternative St. Pölten (GAS) and the Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) competed in the elections . The Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) ran with Willi Gruber as the top candidate, the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) under Hannes Hochetlinger. The top candidate of the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) was Heinz Haltmeyer, the GAS ran under Silvia Buschenreiter, the KPÖ under Ludwig Marzi.
Election result
In the election of October 6, 1991, the SPÖ suffered slight losses, but was able to defend the absolute majority. While the FPÖ was able to win strongly and the GAS achieved two mandates when it took office, the ÖVP had to accept heavy losses and achieved its worst result up to that point. The KPÖ failed because of its entry into the municipal council, GABL no longer stood.

Effects
At the constituent municipal council meeting, Gruber was elected mayor , while Amand Kysela (SPÖ) and Hannes Hochetlinger (ÖVP) were deputy mayors. With Heinz Haltmeyer, the FPÖ was able to provide a city council for the first time. Siegfried Nasko was surprisingly appointed City Councilor for Culture by the SPÖ.
