Dead Man's Bones (2010)

Dead Man's Bones (English for bones of a man totens ) is in California -based indie rock duo consisting of the Canadian actor Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields.

Band history

In 2005, Gosling and Shields met and discovered their mutual fascination for old horror and zombie films , ghost stories and the like. In 2007 they decided to write a kind of scary musical together and put on a performance. The high cost and difficult financing of such a project ultimately prevented them from implementing their plans. Instead, they used the existing song material as the basis for the concept album Dead Man's Bones . Its songs are thematically about werewolves, monsters, haunted stories or the difficult love affair between a girl and a zombie. The music arouses memories of the reviewers, among other things, of Gorillaz , Doo Wop , Halloween , Nick Cave , The Cramps or, in the videos, sometimes of the spirit worlds of Tim Burton .

The album should first be released in the summer of 2009 on the label Werewolf Heart Records founded by Gosling, Shields and producer Tim Anderson (known as the guitarist of Ima Robot ) . However, through the self-made videos for the songs Name in Stone (not included on the album) and In the Room Where You Sleep , which were posted on the Internet in advance , ANTI-Records became aware and signed the band. The album was finally released on October 6, 2009 and reached number 37 on the Billboard Charts in the Best Independent Albums category that same year .

The recordings included members, ages five to seventeen, of the children's choir of the Silverlake Conservatory of Music , a non-profit organization co-founded by Michael Balzary to provide children and young people in need with a musical education. Gosling and Shields played almost all instruments, such as piano , drums , acoustic guitar and cello , even though they had no previous professional experience as musicians (apart from Gosling's early singing experience in the Mickey Mouse Club ). According to Shields, it was therefore initially not planned that he and Gosling would sing on the album; the vocal parts were originally designed for a children's choir only. However, they came to terms with their limited musical abilities and pursued a lo-fi approach to the recordings, in which they limited themselves to a few takes and dispensed with elaborate, electronic post-production.

On their first North American tour in October 2009, they were supported on stage by a locally based children's choir in every city they performed. A talent show took place in the preliminary program.

Videos

Gosling and Shields also made videos for the songs on their debut album, which they themselves directed. In stop-motion animation for the song Dead Hearts playing kinetic artworks Machine With Wishbone of Arthur Ganson a central role. Jed Hathaway, who had previously worked on over 50 episodes of the TV series Robot Chicken , was responsible for the animation .
