Stian Hole (born March 20, 1969 in Hokksund near Drammen in Fylke Buskerud ) is a Norwegian graphic designer , children's book author and illustrator .

Life

Stian Hole was born in the small town of Hokksund in eastern Norway. He completed a degree in visual communication at the State School of Applied Arts in Oslo . With colleagues he founded an agency specializing in book design and typography. Stian Hole is one of the most sought-after illustrators and most innovative picture book artists in Scandinavia. Among other things, he designed book covers for novels by Lars Saabye Christensen , Jostein Gaarder and Jan Guillou . In 2005 he presented his first work as an author, Den gamle mannen og hvalen (translated: The old man and the whale ), which was equally appealing for children and adults. Based on Ernest Hemingway's story The Old Man and the Sea , it depicts the life of an old, silent pair of brothers through the changing seasons on the fjord coast in northern Norway.

Hole became internationally known through Garman's Summer , which was also published in German in 2009 and is about transience, farewell and fear of the unknown. In digitally edited collages of photos, drawings and alienating elements such as comic-like enlarged heads, it tells of Garman and his old aunts, and the last summer before school and the seriousness of life began for the six-year-old boy . For Garman's summer , Stian Hole was awarded the Brageprisen , the most important literary prize in his home country, the Bologna Ragazzi Award and the German Youth Literature Prize.

For his book Morkel's Alphabet he was awarded the GEP illustration prize for children's and youth literature in 2016.

Stian Hole lives in Oslo with his family.
