Nick Cave
Nicholas "Nick" Edward Cave (born September 22, 1957 in Warracknabeal , Australia ) is an Australian musician , lyricist , poet , writer , actor and screenwriter .
life and work
Nick Cave was born to Dawn and Colin Cave. He has three siblings. His mother worked as a librarian , his father taught English literature and died in a car accident in 1978. Cave was raised according to the teachings of the Anglican Church .
In high school, Cave met Mick Harvey , with whom he formed his first band, The Boys Next Door . When they moved to London , they renamed themselves The Birthday Party . In 1982 he recorded the album Burnin 'the Ice with the German avant-garde rock band Die Haut . In 1983 Cave moved to West Berlin and shortly thereafter dissolved The Birthday Party. With Harvey, Blixa Bargeld (singer of Einstürzende Neubauten ) and Barry Adamson he founded the band The Bad Seeds , which still exists today and has released several commercially successful albums. His music moved increasingly away from the ecstatic noise blues of the birthday party and also turned to the art of soulful ballads. In the meantime he has moved away from his punk roots and makes rock 'n' roll music, like u. a. in Henry's Dream or No More Shall We Part . Among other things, he also worked with David Tibet and his band Current 93 and covered Bob Dylan with Death Is Not the End , which he starred with Kylie Minogue , PJ Harvey and Shane MacGowan , or re-intoned Disco 2000 by Pulp .
In 1990 Cave moved to São Paulo , where he met the Brazilian journalist Viviane Carneiro . In 1991 their son was born. In the spring of 1993, Cave moved the family back to London . Cave and Carneiro separated shortly afterwards, their son lived alternately with father and mother. Cave then moved to a house in Hove and had a brief affair with singer PJ Harvey during the production of his album Murder Ballads , but soon met actress Susie Bick , whom he married on the day of the August 11, 1999 solar eclipse . They live in Brighton and Hove on the south coast of England. On July 14, 2015, one of her twin sons died at the age of fifteen when he fell off a cliff in a self-experiment with LSD .
Cave's music is used in some films by Wim Wenders , for example in Der Himmel über Berlin (Cave also has a live performance there), Until the End of the World , Arisha, the Bear and the Stone Ring and In Far Distance, So Close! Cave co-wrote and starred in the 1989 film Ghosts ... of the Civil Dead . The British series Peaky Blinders - Gangs of Birmingham also uses Cave's music.
In 1989 Cave published his novel And the Ass Saw the Angel (German: And the donkey saw the angel ). In 1991 he appeared in the small role of Freak Storm in the film Johnny Suede with Brad Pitt and Catherine Keener .
In 1996, Cave and Bad Seeds released Murder Ballads , an album of songs about murder. The duet with Kylie Minogue, Where the Wild Roses Grow , became a hit, as did Henry Lee with PJ Harvey . In 2004 Nick Cave released the double album Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus with his band . For the first time a gospel choir performed on a Nick Cave record. Influences from gospel, blues , country and punk combine to form a hodgepodge of quotes from pop culture. Thematically, the texts move within the framework of God, eroticism, violence, love and hope. In Get Ready for Love, Nick Cave ironically casts on godliness. The ancient Orpheus - myth he takes on an ironic and turned him into one of his "Comic Songs". Orpheus sings so terribly that the birds of the sky explode, rabbits run their heads in panic, and even God loses his patience, swings his hammer and thrashes the singer into the underworld.
In 2005 Nick Cave wrote the script and soundtrack for the western The Proposition (starring Guy Pearce ), which was shown at the Berlinale in February 2006 , among other places .
In March 2006 Nick Cave recorded an album with Warren Ellis, Jim Sclavunos and Martin Casey at the RAK studios , London. It was released in March 2007 under the band name Grinderman . In 2007, Nick Cave and Warren Ellis wrote the soundtrack for The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford . Nick Cave also has a guest role in the film. In the same year he was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame . In February 2008 Nick Cave and his band released the album Dig, Lazarus, Dig !!! . Once again, the subjects of faith and religiosity as well as biblical images come into focus.
In September 2009, Nick Cave's second novel entitled The Death of Bunny Munro was published . The novel was published almost simultaneously in over 30 countries.
In September 2010 he released a second album with his project Grinderman . On February 18, 2013, another album was released with the Bad Seeds with Push the Sky Away . For the first time, Mick Harvey was not part of the recording. The album contains nine pieces, including the title song. Again produced by Nick Launay, Push the Sky Away was made in France. We No Who UR was released as a single on December 3, 2012 .
At the Sundance Film Festival 2014 , Cave presented his autobiographical pseudo-documentary 20,000 Days on Earth . The 56-year-old describes this fictional 20,000th day of his life as a kind of summary of his career so far. The film, in which his guitarist Blixa Bargeld and Kylie Minogue also appear, received a Directing Award in the World Cinema Documentary category at the festival . On September 8, 2016, another album was released with the Bad Seeds entitled Skeleton Tree . The majority of the songs are shaped by the accidental death of his 15-year-old son Arthur on July 14, 2015.
In late June 2017, Cave and Warren Ellis became members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences .
In 2019 Nick Cave went on tour solo. In smaller halls he offered conversations with Nick Cave , during which he answered questions from the audience (including requests for a hug) and performed a few songs on the piano.
Drugs
Cave said he first started drugs at the age of 14 and was addicted to heroin for several decades . It was only through his relationship with his current wife Susie Bick that he managed to renounce heroin use. His long-time friend Gudrun Gut was amazed at how he managed to complete his novel And the Ass Saw the Angel despite being addicted to heroin .
style
Nick Cave also tried his hand at being a theoretician of songwriting . On behalf of the School for Poetry in Vienna, he gave a lecture that can be heard on the CD The Secret Life of the Love Song with song examples. In it, Cave formulated the idea that a song must always contain melancholy. Caves poetics shows a proximity to romanticism , according to whose theoretical concept every work of art must be broken by irony . Similar to romanticism, his texts are often based on transcendence . In his early albums, the Old Testament was usually an important point of reference for his texts, as was the case in his novel And the Donkey Saw the Angel . Especially with the 1997 album The Boatman's Call , the New Testament came to the fore. In 1998, Cave wrote an introduction to the Gospel of Mark.
In addition to the Bible, many other literary influences can be found in his texts, such as Vladimir Nabokov , Fyodor Dostoyevsky , William Faulkner , Dylan Thomas and Bob Dylan . His musical role models include Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash , Leonard Cohen and John Lee Hooker .
He worked with Die Haut , Anita Lane, Lydia Lunch and the Dirty Three , among others . Johnny Cash, who already recorded a cover version of Nick Caves The Mercy Seat , recorded a duet with Nick Cave, a version of Hank Williams ' I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry . His lyrics can be found in the anthologies King Ink , King Ink II and The Complete Lyrics . There is also the tour film The Road to God Knows Where / Live at the Paradiso (1989) by Uli M Schueppel , which documents a US tour.
