20,000 Days on Earth shows a fictional day in the life of the Australian musician and author Nick Cave . During the allegedly 20,000. One day in his life, Nick Cave is recording the studio recordings of his band Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds ' current album "Push the Sky Away", in a session with British psychoanalyst Darian Leader , over lunch with bandmate Warren Ellis and on a visit seen in the Nick Cave Archives. During the car trips that Nick Cave makes to the different locations, he meets artists such as Blixa Bargeld, Ray Winstone and Kylie Minogue, with whom he shares a common past.

Rob Nelson called the film "an aptly intense and innovative study of the groundbreaking rock poet Nick Cave" in his review for Variety . Cory Everett wrote for Indiewire that the film is "inspirational for anyone interested in creative processes or looking for their muse." Jon Dieringer from Time Magazine praised the film as "a successful balancing act between the banal and the mysterious".
