description

The bent-down amaranth grows as an annual to perennial herbaceous plant . The prostrate or ascending stem is 20 to 50 centimeters long and densely hairy in the upper area. Foliage leaves have a blunt tip and are at most weakly sanded.

The flowering period extends from June to October. There are only two, rarely three bracts.

The fruit is puffed up membranous.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 34.

Occurrence

The natural range of the bent amaranth is South America (for example Argentina, Chile , Peru , Uruguay ). It is a neophyte in Europe and the Mediterranean .

The bent-down amaranth thrives on nitrogen-rich , fresh loam or clay soils , which can be quite compact. It grows in Central Europe in societies of the Polygonion avicularis association, also in those of the Chenopodietea class. In the Mediterranean area it grows in societies of the Polycarpion tetraphylli association from the order Plantaginetalia.

Occasionally it occurs inconsistently, especially along the railway lines. In Central Europe it inhabits wasteland close to the village , some of which is heavily trodden, and solidified banks.
