Mars is a twelve-part US television science fiction series with documentary elements by Ron Howard , Brian Grazer and others from 2016 . The television and production company National Geographic Channel presented this to around 300 invited guests at the Zeiss Planetarium in Berlin at the beginning of November 2016 . In the twelve parts of the docu-drama science fiction elements are contrasted with the current state of development in space travel and Mars research . The theme of the series is the first manned mission to Mars, which is scheduled for 2033 and which will serve as the first stage in the colonization of the planet. There are repeated reviews of earlier events in the history of space travel that come from different documentaries. Interview partners such as Stephen Petranek , Elon Musk , Neil deGrasse Tyson , Andy Weir and Robert Zubrin explain the background and challenges of colonizing Mars. I.a. the HI-SEAS project is also presented. The focus of the documentary series, however, lies in the filmed vision of how this project could run.

On January 13, 2017, the extension for a second season was announced.

action

In 2033, a crew of six astronauts will depart Florida to be the first to set foot on Mars. Their mission is monitored on earth. When they enter the Martian atmosphere, the landing system of their spaceship, the Daedalus, fails. While rescuing the Daedalus, the commander Ben Sawyer is seriously injured. They can land - but 75.3 kilometers away from their planned base camp.

After their vehicle breaks down 16 kilometers before reaching the base camp, the team struggles on foot through the rough terrain of Mars. Because of the commander's injury, it's a race against time. When he reaches his destination, he dies.

In the base camp, however, there is no living module, only a workshop module. This is actually designed for two workers and ensures their survival for a maximum of three months. Therefore, the success of the Daedalus mission depends on finding permanent refuge from the surface radiation and a source of water. Finally, the ground crew locates an old lava tube system on earth using satellite images. The Daedalus team descends through a crater and finds water ice at the bottom. A location for a settlement has now been found.

There is a time leap four years into the future. A first colony, Olympus Town, was established. Another crew lands in order to drive the expansion and search for life on Mars. However, a huge dust storm threatens the colonists.

The dust storm has been raging over Olympus Town for months and cramped the residents into a very small space. This grabs everyone's nerves. A botanist goes nuts and opens an airlock, killing him and seven others. The greenhouse and a laboratory are thus destroyed. All plants freeze to death from the icy temperatures. The colonists are trying to cope with the situation and repair the damage. They find strange crystalline structures on their devices after the storm.

The tragedy also sank public approval, which is why the ground personnel on earth are considering breaking off the mission and evacuating the colonists. At the end of the first season, the ground crew announces a press release. Everyone expects that the end of the mission will be announced. Unexpectedly, however, it is announced that life has been found on Mars, because the structures found are alive. This ensures the continued existence of the colony.
