Jihae

Jihae Kim (* 1989 in Seoul ) is a South Korean musician, composer, actress and multimedia artist active in the USA .

Career

Jihae Kim is the daughter of a South Korean diplomat. She lived in different countries, including Nigeria, Sweden and the United States, since childhood. She studied political science at Emory University in Druid Hills, a suburb of Atlanta . After completing her studies, she moved to New York and became active as an artist.

After initial test recordings with Atlantic Records and London Records , the song composers decided to publish their work independently. In 2009 she founded Septem ; a music and multimedia company focusing on music for production and social projects. Septem is also a digital platform on which artists can publish their media. In 2010, Jihae created the rock opera Fire Burning Rain with the playwright and director John Patrick Shanley , which is based on their concept album of the same name.

Their 2015 album Illusion of You was co-produced by Jihae and Jean-Luc Sinclair with producer Dave Stewart . Illusion of You includes a song written by Jihae, Leonard Cohen and Dave Stewart called "It Just Feels".

From 2016 to 2018, Jihae starred in the miniseries Mars .

She lives in New York.

Collaboration with other artists

Michel Gondry - My Heart is an Elephant (LP, 2007)

Jihae took in filmmaker Michel Gondry, who played drums with kitchenware and a snare drum. For this recording, Trace Magazine declared Jihae, "A creative genius."

Lenny Kravitz - My Heart is an Elephant (LP, 2007)

Lenny Kravitz plays bass and guitar in In Love with a Tornado .

Kevin Thomas - Black Pearl (short film, 2007)

A 6-minute short film based on Jihae's first single. Jihae and Kevin Thomas worked on the conception and making of the short game, where she plays both the male and the female lead. A love story about a young rebellious son of a Liberaz who owns a hair salon in a time warp and his forbidden love, the daughter of a gangster. The set was made in Hong Kong.

Christopher Doyle and Gerald Byrnes - Interview (video art, 2008)

Interview is a video art piece by Gerald Byrnes, filmed by Christopher Doyle with live interviews from the late 1960s as a script and story. Jihae sings and acts in the piece that was presented at the Venice Biennale in 2008.

Marco Brambilla - Ghost (video art, 2010)

Ghost is a 2010 video art piece by Marco Brambilla. Jihae uses her breath like a percussive instrument and breathes Maurice Ravel's classic piece "Bolero".

Koh Sang Woo - Performance Art (2011)

Jihae partners with Korean painter / photographer Koh Sang Woo in a performance art presentation at the Asian Arts Award Ceremony.

Dave Stewart (2012)

Man to Man Woman to Woman is a song by Dave Stewart.

Jihae also sings a duet with the US State Department's Stewart for Walk a Mile project. Walk a Mile is a global campaign to stop bigotry and promote respect between culture, religion, tradition, class and gender.

Multimedia artist

As a multimedia artist, Jihaes was also able to present her works in music, visual arts and film and theater at IFC, NME, MTV, Pitchfork, ID, Vogue Germany, NY Press and various other exhibitions.

Fire Burning Rain Rock Opera 

Created by Jihae and John Patrick Shanley. Inspired by Joan of Arc, it is a futuristic story about the journey of a heroine to free the "light" in order to save the dying earth and humanity. JIhae and a group of 20 dancers, actors and acrobats performed Burning Rain on September 7, 2010 at Le Poisson Rouge and the Highline Ballroom on September 8, 2011.

Elvis is still alive

The video art piece, based on the song "Elvis Is Still Alive," premiered at IFC.

Simon Says Sing For Peace

Simon Says is an interactive musical peace movement from Jihae. Using the most universal children's game as a tool for peace, Jihae wrote a children's peace song called "Simon Says" to give voice to children who have no voice. To raise awareness of child soldiers and affected children in conflict areas around the world and to promote change through the power of song, Jihae made an instrumental version of "Simon Says" that encourages everyone to write and record their own message of peace.

2012 Hours against Hate

Jihae recorded a duet with Dave Stewart Man to Man, Woman to Woman , which was chosen by Hillary Clinton as the theme song for the 2012 Hours Against Hate. This global campaign was developed by the State Department to stop bigotry and promote respect across borders in culture, religion, tradition, class and gender and started in July 2012 in collaboration with the Olympic Committee, Dave Stewart and the David Lynch Foundation in London with a pre-Olympic concert with performances by Mike Scott and the Waterboys, Daryl Hall, KD Tunstall, Dave Stewart and Jihae.
