In 1931, two years before the end of Prohibitionsära to go the Bondurant brothers - Forrest, Howard and Jack - with her boyfriend Cricket Pate the business of illicit still in Franklin County ( Virginia ), after by their gas station and rest area as Use camouflage. One day Jack witnesses the mighty mobster Floyd Banner shooting a business competitor; they exchange a look before Jack returns to the gas station, where Forrest has hired Maggie Beauford, a Chicago dancer , as a new waitress. Shortly thereafter, the gas station is visited by the newly arrived Special Deputy Charley Rakes, who, on behalf of Mason Wardell, the Virginia District Attorney, informs Forrest that he is demanding a share of the black market. Forrest refuses and threatens to kill Rakes if he returns. Forrest then meets with the other black marketeers and persuades them to rebel against Rakes as well; however, they later give in to Rakes' intimidation tactics.
Meanwhile, Jack meets Bertha Minnix, the daughter of the preacher of the Schwarzenau Brethren . Drunk he visits the prayer room of the congregation, whereupon Bertha's father forbids her to continue to see him. Later, Rakes raids Cricket's house to find the stills and runs into Jack. He brutally beats Jack up to intimidate his brothers. Forrest learns from this and tells Jack that he needs to learn how to fight. Forrest and Howard organize a meeting with prospective clients from Chicago, but Howard gets drunk and misses the appointment. It ends with Forrest, with Cricket's help, beating up the two men when they molest Maggie. After Cricket leaves, the men return, cut Forrest's throat, and rape Maggie.
While Forrest is recovering in a hospital, Jack decides to take Cricket to Chicago to sell her remaining liquor. Once there, they are betrayed by their customers, but Floyd Banner recognizes and saves Jack. Banner already knows about the attack on Forrest and knows the identities of the two perpetrators. He gives Jack their addresses and tells him they work for Rakes. Forrest and Howard find, torture, and kill the men to send a warning to Rakes. Banner, on the other hand, becomes a regular customer of the brothers, who relocate their distilleries to the forest and make big profits. The money enables Jack to continue courting Bertha; Forrest and Maggie begin a relationship after she moved into the gas station for safety reasons, but she didn't tell him she was raped.
Jack decides to show Bertha the distillation plant and they are attacked by Rakes and his people who followed them. Howard and Jack are forced to flee Rake's men with Bertha and Cricket, but Cricket is caught and murdered by Rakes.
Driven by vengeance over Cricket's death, Jack drives to a roadblock on a bridge to face Rakes. Howard and a band of other black marketeers follow him to help. Forrest joins them, although Maggie tries to stop him by telling him it was she who took him to the hospital. Forrest realizes that she was attacked that night too, without telling him anything. The black marketeers and Rake's men engage in a firefight in which Forrest is shot several times before Rakes is shot in the leg and tries to escape. Jack and Howard, however, catch Rakes and shoot him in the chest before Howard rams a knife into his back. Now that Rakes and his men are dead, the Bondurants decide to save their money and retire after Prohibition ends . In November 1940, Jack and Bertha, Forrest and Maggie are married, and Howard has married a woman from town, they all have children. During a reunion at Jack's house, Forrest goes onto a frozen lake, breaks into the ice, and later dies of pneumonia .
Reviews
"The atmospheric film, held in dark colors, strives for a realistic, stylistically idiosyncratic representation of the brutal epoch, but cannot choose between historical correctness and genre-conscious action film ."
“The heroes come from the backcountry of the bootleggers and moonshiner, Agent Rakes from Chicago, the city of Al Capones and the capital of alcohol crime. A small but effective shift: The professional, sophisticated criminal from the north, archetype of American cinema , finds his hell with the backwoodsmen in the old south , who have no decency, no style, no distance. They are the heroes here, heroes of the filth. "
