life and career

Hillcoat grew up in Hamilton, Canada . He became known as a director of music videos and worked several times with the Australian musician, writer and actor Nick Cave and the British synth-pop group Depeche Mode .

In 1988 his first feature film Welcome to Hell (Ghosts ... of the Civil Dead) was released , for which Hillcoat wrote the screenplay alongside Nick Cave and three other authors. The film was shown at the 45th Venice International Film Festival in the "International Film Critics Week", where it won the Student Prize of the University of La Sapienza. In addition, the Australian Film Institute recognized "Welcome to Hell" an award for Best Setting (Chris Kennedy).

Hillcoat's 2005 film The Proposition won the Australian Film Institute Award for Best Camera, Best Set, Best Original Score, and Best Set.

His film The Road, based on the novel of the same name by Cormac McCarthy, premiered at the Toronto Film Festival 2009 and was shown in US cinemas from November 2009.

In 2012 Hillcoat completed his fourth feature film, Lawless , based on Matt Bondurant's historical detective novel The Wettest County in the World (2008). The story is told of three brothers (played by Shia LaBeouf , Tom Hardy and Jason Clarke ) who smuggled dark liquor in rural Virginia during the Great Depression and Prohibition and had to defend themselves against authorities and rival gangs. The film, starring Guy Pearce , Gary Oldman , Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska , received an invitation to compete at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2012 .

Hillcoat justifies the frequent depiction of violence in his films with his view that violence is a large part of society and life, which is why he wants to research it. He tries to portray violence as something chaotic that suddenly breaks in and avoids its glorification.
