action
The city of Atlanta , Georgia is ruled by the Russian Mafia , which among other things does business with a gang of ex-soldiers and a group of local police officers . Sergeant Detective Jeffrey Allen gets his nephew Chris a job in the most dangerous part of town full of rival gangs . Little does he know that his new colleague Marcus Belmont is not only corrupt, but also regularly robbed banks with others for the influential Russian mafia boss Irina Vlaslov . Irina does not want to pay anything for the latest robbery, but demands that they break into a strictly secured facility because she needs important documents from there. To distract the colleagues from their coup, the corrupt cops plan to use the police radio code "999" to lure the entire police to a distant part of the city. The code stands for an attack on a police officer, so that experience shows that all available forces will concentrate on it and they can then carry out their robbery undisturbed. Marcus has chosen his new partner Chris as a victim. He takes advantage of the fact that Chris had a conflict with one of the gang bosses and secretly rocks this conflict up. He lures them both into the same building. But not Chris is shot, but his colleague Marcus. When "999" is called out, ex-soldier Michael Atwood believes the plan has worked. He successfully pulls off the robbery with his people. Since Irina wants to avoid paying again, Michael detonates an explosive device in her car, so that Irina is killed. Shortly thereafter, Michael is betrayed and shot by Franco, one of the corrupt police officers on the team. Chris gradually sees through the game and exposes Franco as a corrupt cop. This is then killed in an exchange of fire by Chris' uncle.
Radio code 999
The radio code "999" (pronounced triple 9 , English for triple nine ) is mainly used by the US police. The code “999” in English means “Urgent help needed - Officer down”, which in German can be translated as “Urgent help needed - Police officer shot down”. The radio message refers to the killing or murder of a police officer, which was regarded as a particularly serious crime . After the radio message has been sent, all police officers in the immediate vicinity have to attend to the incident. This reaction to the radio message is exploited in the film.
Reviews
Andres Fischer from Prisma.de wrote: “Anyone who likes hard and dark action thrillers will like 'Code 999'. Even if the film - with the exception of Kate Winslet in an unusual role - has nothing new to offer. ”“ The fact that there is no boredom in the sweaty southern atmosphere is due to the fact that 'Code 999' is told so soberly and without much fuss that one can certainly be faced with fear. Hillcoat exposes a rather gloomy world in the blazing sun in Atlanta, Georgia: A human life doesn't count here, the whole city, it seems, is held in a stranglehold by street gangs, drug cartels and the mafia. "
Jens Adrian commented for treffpunkt-kritik.de : “Whatever happened between the idea and the finished film, a documentary about it will probably be more interesting than Triple 9 ultimately became. The excellent cast gets next to nothing to do. The one-dimensional figures have no development whatsoever - and given their often naive behavior in the last act - only little credibility. The scenes are lined up in a wild way and often seem unnecessary in context. For this, certain transitions are missing. [...] The many characters get lost in a story that is inflated and does not present any aspect imaginatively. Even a solidly executed action scene in the middle of the lengthy two hours doesn't help. "
Hannes Könitzer from robots-and-dragons.de gave a similar verdict : “Great actors, an interesting premise and an intense atmosphere. 'Triple 9' has everything you need for a great thriller on paper. Unfortunately, the spark doesn't want to jump over completely in the second half of the film. In the end, the end result is at an average level. Solid 120 minutes of thriller entertainment definitely comes out of 'Triple 9', but it's not enough for more. From the prerequisites, a real hit would have been possible. "
