Cop

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Cop is a slang term for a police officer .

etymology

The widespread view that the name refers to the buttons made of copper on the uniform or the metal emblem on the front of the police officer's hat, as well as the assumed abbreviation for "Constable On Patrol", does not apply.

The word is rather a regression of copper , which has nothing to do with the same English name for copper, but is derived from the verb to cop , which is mainly used in British English for "to make an arrest " . This verb, which appeared in parlance in the early 18th century, goes back to the obsolete verb to cap with the same meaning, which comes from the French capter ("to grasp, to fetter ").
