The Cop is an American thriller starring James Woods , which James B. Harris directed in 1988 based on the novel Blood on the Moon by James Ellroy .

Sergeant Lloyd Hopkins is a detective in the Los Angeles Police Department working on a brutal woman murder in West Hollywood . This task is his top priority and he relates the murder to sixteen other unsolved feminicides in the past fifteen years.
The trail leads via feminist Kathleen McCarthy's bookstore to the high school that the woman attended. In the course of the investigation, more murders occur, Hopkins is suspended from duty for misconduct, breaks into McCarthy looking for clues and shoots a corrupt patrolman in self-defense . The film ends with a nightly showdown in the high school gym.
Reviews
Roger Ebert wrote that James Woods gave the thriller its personality and humor. He is "committed" and "unconventional", "born" for the role.
