Negativland is a Californian rock band that uses collage and sampling techniques . The band was formed in the late 1970s and named itself after a song by the German Krautrock band Neu!

The main members are Mark Hosler , Richard Lyons , Don Joyce and David Wills . For a time, also played Chris Grigg for negative country. Peter Conheim and Jonathan Land joined in 1997. Her most famous albums are Escape From Noise (1987) and the single U2 (1991).

history

In 1987 the album Escape From Noise was released . including the song Christianity is stupid with samples from the Christian propaganda film If footmen tire you - What will horses do? . After the album was released, Negativland itself launched the rumor that the police were looking for it because Christianity is stupid had incited a fifteen-year-old to murder his parents. This fictitious story, which was originally intended as the band's excuse not to have to go on an (expensive) concert tour, quickly became a sure-fire success and haunted the print and TV news for weeks. Negativland processed this semi-voluntary media coup in their subsequent album, Helter Stupid .

In 1991 the single U2 was released , which brought the band a lawsuit by the label Island Records on behalf of the Irish rock band U2 for infringement of copyright and trademark law. The cover of the single shows a picture of the spy plane U2 , in large letters "U2" and (in lower case) "Negativland". Island Records was of the opinion that this cover was suitable to entice fans of the band U2 to buy the single by mistake. The two pieces of music on the single ( I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - 1991 A Cappella Mix and I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - Special Edit Radio Mix ) used extensive samples from the U2 of the same name -Song and recordings from the US Top 40 radio show with Casey Kasem . Negativland declared the use of the samples as fair use , but still had to recall and destroy the entire edition. The legal costs also brought the band to the verge of financial ruin.

In the 1990s, Negativland u. a. with the British band Chumbawamba . Craig Baldwin's film Sonic Outlaws (1995) deals extensively with the history of Negativland.

In September 2005, Negativland celebrated its twenty-fifth anniversary with an exhibition called Negativlandland at the Gigantic Artspace gallery in Manhattan.

First founding member Ian Allen died in January 2015 as a result of a heart valve operation, and Donald Joyce died six months later of heart failure. Founding member Richard Lyons died in April 2016 of complications from a recurrence of skin cancer .
