occupation

The department store Cop is an American action - comedy thriller by director Steve Carr from the year 2009 .

action

Paul Blart is a security guard in a shopping mall . He would like to be a police officer, but failed the physical test because - after overcoming an obstacle course despite being overweight - he collapsed unconscious shortly before the finish line. Blart has hypoglycemia and is more likely to feel faint if he hasn't ingested sugary foods for too long.

His mother and daughter Maya try to comfort him, but also point out that he still has no girlfriend. They urge him to search for a partner on the Internet, with a self-made video showing his skills on a Segway that he constantly uses on the way to work and in the shopping center. Blart is a dedicated “department store cop” and raves about Amy, who is a new wig seller in his shopping center. But hardly anything that he starts to get to know better works as desired.

Blarts new colleague Veck, which he gives an introduction to the job turns out later as the leader of a band of robbers by members of Parkour - and skaters - subculture . These storm the mall on the day after Thanksgiving , known as Black Friday , and drive away the numerous customers. In the bank belonging to the shopping center, the attackers, under Veck's leadership, take the employees hostage, including Amy, who wanted to cash her paycheck there. Blart is distracted by an arcade machine , so he only notices the robbery when he sees the empty corridors of the mall.

While the other security guards were evacuated as well as the customers and are at the police station in front of the mall, Blart does not comply with the police's request to leave the mall, as he does not want to leave Amy hostage. Blart does not let himself be deterred by the SWAT , who has meanwhile moved under the leadership of his former classmate Commander Kent. Rather, the unarmed Blart opposes the robbers and with courage, luck and sometimes more, sometimes less skill, can take out one after the other - mostly bloodless. In addition to his Segway, he also uses numerous items that he finds in the shops. His daughter, who appeared in the mall, is now one of the hostages. Although Blart can outsmart his last opponent Veck at first, he ultimately fails because of his kindness and clumsiness. Veck escapes with Amy and Maya from the mall in the direction of the airport.

Blart takes up the chase and lets Commander Kent, in whose respect he has apparently increased through his efforts, get into his car. Veck can escape the two at first, but Blart can catch up with him as he climbs over the airport fence. Blart tricks Veck off and arrests him. Commander Kent reveals himself to be an accomplice and threatens to shoot Blart, Maya and Amy. At that moment, Blart's superior, who has meanwhile also arrived at the airport with the police, can overpower Kent with a police officer's weapon.

Blart is offered to switch to the police. However, he refuses to remain a "department store cop". He also thought of Amy's birthday and made her a declaration of love at the airport. In the credits, Blart and Amy get married in the shopping center, at the party that follows they dance on two Segways .

continuation

The sequel called Der Kaufhaus Cop 2 (original title Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 ), the first trailer of which was released by Columbia Pictures in December 2014, opened in German cinemas on April 9, 2015. Here, too, Kevin James takes on the role of Paul Blart again.

criticism

“Of course, things were shamelessly stolen here: the action patterns from ' Die Hard ', the David versus Goliath constellation from ' Kevin - Home Alone ', the disgustingness of Inspector Clouseau from The Pink Panther . But it is the tragicomic figure of ' King of Queens ' star Kevin James who combines such ingredients into something new and unmistakable. With touching zeal the fat man fights against all pitfalls, makes a monkey with ridiculous clothes and collects sympathy points from the audience with his embarrassed look. Logical that Paul still gets his lady of the heart - in the end. However, Kevin James is just beginning - a great cinema career. Conclusion: The family-friendly action comedy catapults Kevin James into America's new top comedian. There 'The Department Store Cop' became a big surprise hit. "

The Department Store Cop in the USA had already earned its production costs many times after a short time. Not surprising, because this film full of fun, action and heart is itself like an American mall: there is something for everyone in the family. "

- OÖN

“Films like this one are tailored to a US audience, because the Americans love everyday heroes more than anything. The ingenious comedian Kevin James, who fights against windmills and Wampe as the funny Sancho Panza, should also score in this country with facial expressions, heart and strong sayings. An entertaining cinema fun that relies on turbulent situation comedy and the pantomime strengths of a lovable loser. "

“Too pointless. Splashes along like department store music. "

"A comedy that scores points with well-arranged punchlines and the main actor's talent for slapstick, straightforwardly staged as undemanding family entertainment."
