The city of Braintree is a city in Norfolk County , Massachusetts , United States . At the 2007 census, the population was 34,422. Braintree is located in the Greater Boston , has access to the Red Line of public transport of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority and is a member of the Metropolitan Area Planning Commission's South Shore Coalition .

The town of Braintree was founded in 1640 and named after the English town of Braintree . The land belonging to the urban area was later divided into the parishes of Randolph , Holbrook and Quincy and parts of Milton . The northern district of Braintree, which now makes up the main part of the city of Quincy, was the birthplace of the American Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams as well as the politician John Hancock and General Sylvanus Thayer , the "father of West Point ".

The infamous murders that led to the trial of Sacco and Vanzetti took place in Braintree in 1920 . The co-inventor of the telephone , Thomas A. Watson , spent his retirement here.

Braintree's population grew by more than 50% in the 1920s.

In January 2008, Braintree changed its form of government from the " Representative Town Meeting " to the " Mayor-Council Government " (literally: Mayor's Council Government ). Braintree is located in the Greater Boston metropolitan area , which has excellent rail and air connections and excellent connections to highways . The Massachusetts Route 128 and Interstate 95 divide the region into inner and outer zones. Braintree is a member of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), which has bus services to the MBTA train stations of Quincy Adams , Quincy Center , Braintree and Ashmont . The MBTA also provides THE RIDE transport system for elderly and disabled people.

Most of Braintree's residents use Logan International Airport in Boston. Norwood Memorial Airport is also located in Norfolk County , a relief airport with two taxiways that is also easily accessible from Braintree.
