Priscilla Chan (born February 24, 1985 in Braintree , Massachusetts ) is an American pediatrician and patroness . She is married to Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg and with him leads the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative , a company that uses the wealth of both people for charitable causes. In 2016, Chan and her husband Mark Zuckerberg were voted one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World.

Life

Chan was born in Braintree in 1985 and grew up in Quincy , a suburb of Boston . Her parents were boat refugees from Vietnam of Chinese descent. In 2003 she graduated from Quincy High School top of the class. Chan joined Harvard University in 2003 , where she met and began dating Mark Zuckerberg. She graduated with a BA in Biology in 2007 and studied Spanish . She is the first ever college graduate in her family. After graduating, she taught science for a year at the private Harker School before studying medicine at the University of California, San Francisco , in 2008 . She graduated in 2012 and completed her pediatric training in summer 2015.

Chan Zuckerberg Initiative

On December 1, 2015, Chan and her husband Zuckerberg founded the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative and announced that they would donate 99% of their wealth through the organization over the course of their lives. The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative's self-defined goal is to "promote human potential and promote equality in areas such as health, education, scientific research and energy". The organization makes its donations and investments for charitable purposes as a registered company. Chan's charitable goals focus on education, healthcare, and science, all closely related to her personal background. She is believed to have been a powerful influence on her husband's philanthropy.

The initiative donated u. a. $ 75 million to the San Francisco General Hospital where Chan worked. In 2013, they donated 18 million shares of Facebook (valued at more than $ 970 million) to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation .

Mark Zuckerberg announced in 2016 that he would sell $ 13 billion in Facebook shares to create a research facility called Chan Zuckerberg Biohub to study and cure teething problems . As of September 2018, $ 5.3 billion had been invested in the project.

Chan and Zuckerberg have received multiple awards for the initiative.

Personal

Chan married Zuckerberg on May 19, 2012, the day after Facebook went public. On December 1, 2015, they announced the birth of their daughter Maxima Chan Zuckerberg . On August 28, 2017, Chan gave birth to their second daughter, who was named August . Before giving birth to their first child, Chan suffered three miscarriages.

According to a Facebook post by Mark Zuckerberg, Chan is a Buddhist . She is fluent in Cantonese , English and Spanish.

She lives with her husband in Palo Alto ( California ).
