The University of California, San Francisco ( UCSF ; German University of California, San Francisco ) has been part of the University of California ( UC ), a system of state universities in the US state of California , since 1873 . The San Francisco campus is the smallest of all of the University of California's campuses, measuring approximately 55 acres, and is entirely focused on medicine and other health sciences.

In 2003 there were 2,746 students enrolled at the university. UCSF is divided into the departments of dentistry , medicine , nursing and pharmacy and with around 18,600 employees is the second largest employer in San Francisco.
