Johann David Gruschwitz (born February 23, 1776 in Unterheinsdorf , Vogtland , † January 7, 1848 in Neusalz an der Oder ) was a German weaver and entrepreneur .

Life

Johann David Gruschwitz apprenticed to his older brother to learn the weaving trade. Then he worked in Reichenbach in his father's canvas trade . In 1801 he joined the Moravian Brethren in Gnadenfrei (Silesia) as a brother. In 1808 he went to Neusalz, where he modernized the weaving mill of the Brethren and thereby considerably strengthened the yarn trade and dyeing.

In 1811 he installed the first twisting machine in the "Brüderhaus". With this machine, Gruschwitz became self-employed in 1816 and began to produce the later very well-known Gruschwitz thread . In doing so he created the basis of one of the most important flax spinning mills in Silesia. In 1847 Gruschwitz left the company, which his sons Heinrich Gruschwitz (1816–1885) and Alexander Gruschwitz (1819–1888) successfully continued under the company J. D. Gruschwitz & Sons oHG . Johann David Gruschwitz died on January 7, 1848 at the age of 72 in Neusalz.

In 1906 the company was transformed into Gruschwitz Textilwerke AG , in whose management the Doherr and von Treskow families were also represented as Gruschwitz descendants.
