history

As early as 1968 there were first efforts in North County to establish a college in San Diego . However, it was not until 1989 that the then governor George Deukmejian decided to establish the 20th campus of the CSU in San Marcos by law.

Bill W. Stacy was appointed the first president of the university in June 1989 and, along with the 12 other founding members he appointed, laid the foundation for the future development of the university. Work on the new campus began in February 1990 and was completed in August 1992.

Since the first students were admitted in September 1990, the courses had to be held in premises rented for this purpose until the construction work was completed. In the following years, the campus was steadily expanded with further buildings (including Craven Hall, University Hall, Kellogg Library, Markstein Hall).
