The University of California, Riverside (also known as UCR or UC Riverside ; German University of California, Riverside ) was founded in 1954 and is part of the University of California ( UC ), a system of state universities in the US state of California . The main campus of the university is in Riverside , a branch in Palm Desert . In the spring of 2005 there were 16,622 students enrolled at the university.

history

The campus' roots date back to 1907 when the government built the Citrus Experiment Station to research southern California's agricultural problems. In 1948 the founding of the College of Letters and Science was approved, which finally opened in 1954.

Britches

Britches was a monkey kept at UC Riverside for testing purposes . Immediately after birth, Britches was separated from his mother and his eyelids were sewn shut. Activists of Animal Liberation Organization liberated Britches, removed the seams and were reintroduced apes later.
