The Big West Conference is a nine-university league for various sports that play in NCAA Division I. In college football , the teams played in Division IA (now known as the Football Bowl Subdivision ) until the 2000 season .

The league was founded in 1969 as the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference (PCAA) and renamed the Big West Conference after nineteen years in 1988. Its headquarters are in Irvine , California . Until 2005, universities from various states, such as Texas , Utah , Nevada or Idaho , were members of the Big West, but most of them switched to the Western Athletic Conference . After then were members by 2012 only Californian universities, replacing University of Hawaii at Manoa in the former realignment in the West Coast Conference migrating University of the Pacific , which until then was the only member university in the history of the Big West in private ownership.

The sports in which the Big West Conference organizes competitions include basketball , cross-country skiing , golf , soccer , diving , tennis and athletics, as well as baseball for men and softball and volleyball for women and, since 2017/18, also for men.

Hawaiʻi ( Rainbow Warriors ), UC Davis ( Aggies ) and Cal Poly ( Mustangs ) also play American football - Hawaiʻi in the Mountain West Conference , UC Davis and Cal Poly in the Big Sky Conference .
