The Cop is an American crime film from 1928. The screenplay of the silent film is based on a story by Elliot Clawson .

The police novice Pete Smith is assigned to the gang leader Scarface Marcas. Smith and Marcas were friends once, when Smith wasn't a cop. He had taken care of the wounded gangster, who ran away with his coat and money.

When Pete's friend, Sergeant Coughlin, dies in a shootout with Marcas, he redoubles his efforts. In simple clothes he can approach Marcas, who does not recognize him, and shoot him. This enables Pete to free Mary Monks, who is being held like a prisoner by Marcas.
