The first election to the Bavarian State Parliament took place on January 12, 1919 (Bavaria on the right bank of the Rhine) and February 2, 1919 (Palatinate), after Kurt Eisner had proclaimed the Free State of Bavaria on November 8, 1918 .
Prime Minister Eisner's USPD suffered a heavy electoral defeat. The strongest party was the conservative Bavarian People's Party . Eisner was murdered on the way to the opening of the newly elected state parliament on February 21, 1919. His successor was Johannes Hoffmann from the SPD .
