The election to the 11th Bavarian State Parliament took place on October 12, 1986. The turnout was 70.1%.

Starting point and result

In this election, the Greens succeeded in entering the Bavarian state parliament for the first time. For the first time since the state elections in 1954 , the SPD fell below 30% of the total vote. The Republicans who ran for the first time achieved a result of three percent of the vote right from the start.

For the CSU Prime Minister Franz Josef Strauss ran as the top candidate, for the SPD Karl-Heinz Hiersemann .

After the election, the CSU formed a sole government under the leadership of Franz Josef Strauss ( Cabinet Strauss III ), after whose death in 1988 the previous Finance Minister Max Streibl took over the government ( Cabinet Streibl I ).
