Focus of political work

Karl-Heinz Hiersemann's political focus was the party structural reform and the improvement of the rights of the opposition in parliament, including in the committees of inquiry . He campaigned against the excesses of the radical decree in the 1970s and against deportations of rejected asylum seekers in the 1980s. In the state election campaigns, Hiersemann focused on the issues of housing shortages, care shortages and equality between men and women.

Social Commitment

As a result of his mediation, the town twinning between Erlangen and Jena came about as one of the first German-German partnerships as early as the GDR era. In the 1990s he got involved as manager of the second division handball team CSG Erlangen and organized a pool of sponsors in the Erlangen economy, from which the "Economic Council for Top Handball" was formed. The aim here is not only to promote handball, but also to promote contacts between entrepreneurs and politicians through regular high-profile roundtables and discussions.

After his death

Since 1999, the SPD Middle Franconia and the SPD Erlangen have jointly awarded the Karl Heinz Hiersemann Prize every two years to young people and youth groups who campaign for freedom, democracy, tolerance and international understanding.

The venue of the second division handball team HC Erlangen - in which the handball department of CSG Erlangen was merged - was renamed Karl-Heinz-Hiersemann-Halle by the city of Erlangen. Likewise, the association's economic council now bears the name Karl-Heinz-Hiersemann-Gesellschaft.
