Helmut Rothemund (* 31 March 1929 in Rehau , Upper Franconia , † 27. June 2004 in Munich ) was a German politician of the SPD .

Rothemund was born in 1929 into a family of porcelain painters. He was drafted for military service in 1945 . After a short imprisonment of war , he graduated from high school in 1948 .

His law studies in Erlangen he graduated in 1954 with the promotion of Dr. iur. from. In 1956 he got a position in the Bavarian State Ministry of Justice . In the same year he was the list leader for the SPD in the district elections, and in 1958 he was the youngest district administrator in Bavaria and won the district election in the district of Rehau (now part of the district of Hof ).

Rothemund was a member of the Bavarian State Parliament from 1962 to 1992 . From 1970 to 1976 and from 1986 to 1992 he was Vice President of Parliament. In the meantime he headed the SPD parliamentary group. In 1977 he succeeded Hans-Jochen Vogel as chairman of the SPD Bavaria and held office until 1985. In the Bavarian state elections in 1978 and 1982 , Rothemund ran as the top candidate of his party. From 1989 to 1998 he was the successor to Volkmar Gabert as Chairman of the Georg von Vollmar Academy .
