Albert Schmid (politician, 1945)

Albert Maximilian Schmid (born November 18, 1945 in Laaber ) is a German politician ( SPD ). From 2000 to 2010 he was President of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees . From March 2009 to 2017 he was chairman of the state committee of Catholics in Bavaria .

Life

After studying law and subsequent doctorate to become a Dr. iur. utr. Via the representative system as a constitutional principle (1971), the social democrat was elected professional mayor of the city of Regensburg in 1972. As the first deputy of Mayor Rudolf Schlichtinger , he tried to succeed him as Lord Mayor in the local elections in 1978. He was defeated by the CSU candidate Friedrich Viehbacher .

From 1978 to 1982 he was State Secretary of the Federal Ministry for Spatial Planning, Building and Urban Development . After the change of government in 1982 he worked again as an independent lawyer, only to return to professional politics in 1990. He won a state parliament mandate and became parliamentary leader of the Bavarian SPD . He lost this office in a power struggle to Renate Schmidt , the state chairwoman of the SPD, in 1995 and was deputy state chairman of his party.

Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schröder and Federal Minister of the Interior Otto Schily appointed the lawyer as President of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees on July 1, 2000. With the appointment the waiver of all political mandates and offices went hand in hand. In March 2009, he was elected chairman of the state committee of Catholics in Bavaria for the first time for four years in Bamberg . The re-election for a further electoral period from 2013 to 2017 took place in April 2013 in Würzburg by the full assembly of the state committee. Schmid has been a member of the State Committee of Catholics since 1993.

From 2011 to 2015 Schmid was a member of the University Council of the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt .

Awards

In November 2010 Schmid received the Georg von Vollmar Medal, the highest award of the BayernSPD, from the SPD parliamentary group leader Markus Rinderspacher .

Private

Albert Maximilian Schmid is married and has two daughters.
