Altja is a historic beach and fishing village in the Estonian municipality of Vihula in Lääne-Viru County . It is located directly on the Baltic Sea in a natural landscape in the Lahemaa National Park . Today the village has 28 inhabitants (as of 2006).

The history of Altja goes back to the 15th century. Today the place is a popular tourist destination with its historical fishing culture. A thatched historical jug ( Altja kõrts ) offers traditional Estonian food . On a headland you can see the old fishing sheds and barns, which were renovated in 1973/74. There are numerous hiking trails nearby.

In June 2005 the Estonian President Arnold Rüütel and the German President Horst Köhler celebrated the Midsummer Festival in Altja together.
