After the state elections in 2018, she came under pressure because of the historically poor election result. The former state chairman and top candidate Renate Schmidt criticized Kohnen's lack of presence in the election campaign and suggested that she resign. Munich's former mayor and top SPD candidate for the 2013 state election, Christian Ude , accused Kohnen of a “politically free, content-free election campaign” and also suggested that she step down. Resignation calls also came from the parliamentary group of the BayernSPD, the Bavarian regional group in the German Bundestag and from individual local politicians.
In Kohnen's own constituency in the southern district of Munich, an open letter was formulated that Kohnen should not stand in the way of a renewal at the party leadership in Bavaria.
