This led to an urban development based on environmental considerations with environmentally friendly transport policy and landscape and garden planning. Above all, the consistent promotion of bicycle traffic earned Erlangen the reputation of a bicycle city . But other measures under Dietmar Hahlweg, such as the modernization of the sewage treatment plant, the expansion of the district heating and natural gas network and the direct feed of solar power into the public utility network, led to the inclusion in the UN honorary list " Global 500 " and the award of the title " Federal capital for nature and environmental protection " by Deutsche Umwelthilfe both in 1990 and 1991.

Ostpolitik

The social democrat Hahlweg also tried to support Willy Brandt's Ostpolitik at the local level. This included events such as “Encounter with Poland” (1976) or the start of negotiations on a town twinning with Vladimir in the former Soviet Union . In 1987 these were just as successful as the negotiations with Jena .

German Association of Cities

Hahlweg was a member of several committees of the German Association of Cities and its representative in the Committee of the Regions .
