"The Eye of the Fallen Duck": Location of College in Virginia

The University of Virginia's College at Wise (colloquially mostly UVa Wise ; until 1999: Clinch Valley College of the University of Virginia ) is a university ( college ) founded in 1954 in Wise (near Norton ) in Wise County in the southwest of the US state Virginia. As a liberal arts college , the university offers four-year courses that lead to a bachelor's degree with a focus on comprehensive general education .

The college is now the only branch college of the University of Virginia and the westernmost state university of Virginia.

history

In the middle of the 20th century there were efforts in the far west of Virginia to establish a regional university, since there were no universities west of Radford in Virginia and an academic education was "out of reach" for many people. The new institution should therefore enable young people in this area to study on site. The population of Wise then raised US $ 6,000 , and the town of Wise provided two buildings. The University of Virginia, which is also a state-owned university, was asked for help in setting up the university. It then contributed 5,000 US dollars and agreed to pay the same contribution again next year, provided that the college still exists.

The college opened in September 1954, initially with 100 students. The university initially only offered two-year courses; if students wanted to complete a longer course of study, they had to switch to other universities. However, the demand for four-year studies soon arose, prompting the college to award the first Bachelor of Arts degrees in 1970 and the first Bachelor of Science degrees in 1973. To date (as of 2007) around 6,000 students have earned a bachelor's degree at the university.

Clinch Valley College sought to change its name in order to strengthen its advertising connection with the renowned University of Virginia . In 1999 it took its current name University of Virginia's College at Wise .

Study conditions

The college has nearly 2,000 students who are taught by approximately 140 faculty and professors. The university offers over 25 different major subjects and just as many minor subjects; in addition, there are licenses that future teachers in the USA need for their teaching license.

Today the College at Wise enjoys a very good reputation for a state liberal arts college, but - like the other state liberal arts colleges in the USA - it cannot compare with the best private ones. In the controversial rankings of US News & World Report it was listed as one of the ten best state liberal arts colleges, but the ranking does not list a single state among the top 50 liberal arts colleges, and the University of For example, Virginia's College at Wise was not listed in the Top 100 Liberal Arts Colleges in 2007.

The college has agreements on cooperation ( sister institutions ) including exchanges with several renowned universities. It all started in 1998 with the agreement with Istanbul University in Turkey, followed by Dumlupinar University in Kütahya, Turkey (1999) and the University of Seville in Spain (2000).
