Karl Heinrich Lades (born July 4, 1914 in Nuremberg ; † August 4, 1990 in Erlangen ) was a German politician ( CSU ) and Lord Mayor of Erlangen from 1959 to 1972 .

Professional and private

Heinrich Lades was born in Nuremberg, but grew up in Erlangen. From 1933 to 1939 he studied law and economics in Munich and Erlangen. He was then drafted into the Wehrmacht . After the war, he first worked as a consultant in the Bavarian Ministry of Culture in Munich, then in the Federal Youth and Family Ministry in Bonn.

Lord Mayor of the City of Erlangen

On July 5, 1959, Heinrich Lades was elected Lord Mayor of Erlangen to succeed the late Michael Poeschke and was sworn in on July 10; he achieved 57.9 percent of the vote against his only opponent Peter Zink . In the regular mayor election a year earlier, Lades Poeschke was clearly inferior. Lades was confirmed in office in 1965 with 65.1 percent (against Dieter Haack ) and in 1971 with 51.9 percent (against Dietmar Hahlweg ). In the mayor election in 1972, which had become necessary due to the regional reform , he was clearly defeated by Dietmar Hahlweg.

During Lades' term of office, Erlangen rose to become a major city (the 100,000 mark was not exceeded until 1974). The Siemens location was expanded in 1965 with the opening of the “Research Center” in the south of the city, and the Friedrich-Alexander University opened the Technical Faculty in 1966. The connection Erlangen to Nuremberg and Fürth was expanded for car traffic as "Frankenschnellweg", which was later continued as the A73 to the north. The Rhine-Main-Danube Canal reached Erlangen from the north in 1970. In 1967 Kosbach was incorporated with the districts Häusling and Steudach , creating the basis for new residential areas in the west of the city.

In the field of culture and leisure, Heinrich Lades built the Frankenhof leisure center (opened in 1963) with an indoor swimming pool, youth hostel and other cultural and leisure activities. South of the historic city center, the “New Market” with department stores, a shopping center, the new town hall and a town hall with an event center and hotel was built in 1968; the town hall is named after Lades today. A number of secondary schools were also built under Lades. In 1961 the town partnership with Eskilstuna was established, followed by the partnership with Rennes in 1964 .

In particular, Lade's urban development policy in the historic city center was controversial. So he pursued plans to redesign the baroque city complex to make it suitable for cars. The historic two-story buildings were to be replaced by three-story buildings.

In addition to and after his office as Lord Mayor, Heinrich Lades was also a member of the Middle Franconia District Assembly from 1962 to 1982 .
