Bicycle city

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A cycling city is a city in which cycling is particularly important, for example because cycling has an above-average share of the journeys made by the inhabitants (distribution of means of transport in the modal split ) or the city administration and politicians attach particular importance to cycling. The criteria are not clear. Many cities use the title "Bike City" in the tourism - marketing , which is not always justified.

Rush hour traffic in the Danish city of Copenhagen , where 36% of the population commute to work or training by bike : next to Brussels , Paris and Moscow one of the (partly self-proclaimed) " European cycling capitals "

In Germany, Münster , Erlangen , Bremen , Oldenburg (Oldenburg) , Freiburg im Breisgau , Heidelberg and Bocholt have been cycling cities since the 1990s . Karlsruhe , Kiel or Greifswald , which with 44% have the highest bicycle traffic share on the routes of the residents, are less well known nationwide. The city of Munich tried as the cycling capital , Bonn , as the cycling capital Bonn 2020 , is trying to market its sometimes ambitious plans to increase cycling with a corresponding label.

In other countries, for example, Copenhagen in Denmark , Sandnes in Norway , Groningen , Utrecht and Amsterdam in the Netherlands or Bozen and Ferrara in Italy are perceived as cycling cities.

City comparisons

Cycle City Amsterdam: a popular cycle route through the Rijksmuseum towards the city center.

According to independent, global city comparisons using different methods and criteria , Amsterdam was the most bicycle-friendly (large) city in the world from 2009 to 2013, ahead of Copenhagen and Utrecht or Barcelona, ahead of Portland and Copenhagen.

After a political decision in 2011, the goal in Copenhagen was to become the world's best bicycle city by the end of 2015. For the redesign of cities with a special preference for cycling, the word copenhagenize has already become commonplace in English . In the meantime, this reputation is no longer only spread among experts, but increasingly also in the media of various countries.

According to a Europe-wide study by the Verkehrsclub Österreich VCÖ 2013, however, Houten is the front runner in terms of the percentage of bicycles in traffic . Around 44 percent of the residents' journeys here are made by bike, Houten is followed by Oldenburg (Oldenburg) with 43%, Münster with 38%, Copenhagen with 35%, Leiden with 33% and Groningen with 31%.

Streetfilms declared Groningen a world bicycle city in 2013 and compiled an English-language video with impressions of what is happening on the road, background information on the particular attractiveness of bicycle traffic and comments from users. Because of deliberately planned restrictions for car traffic with a simultaneous preference for cycling, especially in the city center, but also in other source-destination connections, the bicycle is significantly faster than the car and the bus. There are special bridges for pedestrians and cyclists over a busy canal, where cars have to wait up to ten minutes at a swing bridge for ships to pass.
