Bicycle-friendly community

The bicycle-friendly municipality award is given by individual federal states. The term bicycle-friendly city was introduced in the early 1980s by Konrad Otto-Zimmermann , then an employee at the Federal Environment Agency . North Rhine-Westphalia was the first federal state in which a working group of bicycle-friendly cities was founded in 1993 .

North Rhine-Westphalia

In North Rhine-Westphalia, membership in the working group for pedestrian and bicycle-friendly cities, municipalities and districts in North Rhine-Westphalia (AGFS) entitles them to bear the title “Bicycle -friendly City”. Admission is for seven years, after which a new examination takes place.

One of the admission criteria is the municipal policy objective of increasing the proportion of local mobility to 60% of the total traffic volume.

There are currently 75 member municipalities in NRW.

Baden-Württemberg

In Baden-Württemberg, the state awards the “Bicycle-friendly municipality”. The prerequisite for an award is a. membership in the working group for bicycle-friendly municipalities in Baden-Württemberg (AGFK-BW). The state working group was founded at the beginning of 2010 and in 2011 the first municipalities in Baden-Württemberg were awarded. The award must be renewed after five years.

75 municipalities and districts are members of AGFK-BW. The cities and districts that have received awards so far are described in the article Bicycle-friendly municipality in Baden-Württemberg .

Bavaria

The working group for bicycle-friendly municipalities in Bavaria (AGFK Bayern) was founded in early 2012. Admission to the AG is initially for four years. During this time, a decision will be made about the award of the “Bicycle-friendly municipality in Bavaria” award. The award itself takes place at the proposal of the working group by the State Ministry of the Interior. Seven years after the award there is a new examination.

At the end of 2017 there were 61 member municipalities.

Lower Saxony / Bremen

Since 2015 there has been an opportunity in Lower Saxony to be certified as a “Bicycle-friendly municipality of Lower Saxony”. Before that there was a competition called “State Prize for Bicycle-Friendly Commune”, which was awarded to 12 communes and districts from 2002 to 2015.

The working group for bicycle-friendly municipalities in Lower Saxony / Bremen (AGFK Lower Saxony / Bremen) is made up of 50 municipalities, including all of Lower Saxony's major cities except Salzgitter and Bremen , which, according to their own information, comprise 69% of the population.

Thuringia

The working group for bicycle-friendly municipalities in Thuringia (AGFK-TH) was founded at the end of 2013 and at the beginning of 2017 consisted of nine municipalities and four districts.

Brandenburg

In May 2015, the working group for bicycle-friendly municipalities in Brandenburg (AGFK BB) was founded. The founding members were nine cities and four counties.

Saxony-Anhalt

In November 2019, the working group bicycle-friendly municipality of Saxony-Anhalt was founded. The founding members include 36 municipalities.
