The election for the 12th Bavarian State Parliament took place on October 14, 1990. The turnout was 65.9%.

Starting point and result

The state election of October 14, 1990 was the first election in Bavaria after the death of long-time Prime Minister Franz Josef Strauss , his successor was Max Streibl . Karl-Heinz Hiersemann was (as in 1986) the top candidate of the SPD.

Ten parties ran for election. Seven of them were eligible throughout Bavaria, the Christian League - The Party for Life only competed in the administrative districts of Upper Bavaria and Swabia, the Augsburger Bürger Union (ABU) only in the administrative district of Swabia and the Bamberg Citizens' Block (BBB) only in the administrative district Upper Franconia, which according to the Bavarian state election system , which provides for a nationwide 5% hurdle, made success for those groups almost impossible. The Republicans achieved their best state election result in Bavaria and narrowly missed entry into the state parliament, the FDP succeeded in entering after eight years of absence.
