The CSU suffered heavy losses of over 10 percentage points, but was still by far the strongest party. Significant growth and the second strongest force were the Greens , followed by the Free Voters . The AfD reached just over 10 percent when it first appeared, while the SPD became only the fifth-strongest party after major losses. The FDP barely reached the state parliament with 5.1 percent, the left clearly missed it.

The CSU lost its absolute majority in the state parliament, but quickly found a junior partner in the free voters. The governing coalition holds 112 of the 205 seats in parliament. Markus Söder thus remained Prime Minister.
