State election in Bavaria 1974
The election for the 8th Bavarian State Parliament took place on October 27, 1974. The turnout was 77.7%.
Result
In this election, the CSU achieved its best state election result to date. It was only four seats short of a two-thirds majority in parliament. In this state election, the five percent hurdle was applied in the Free State for the first time . The FDP was just able to overcome them, whereby three parties were represented in the state parliament with the CSU, SPD and FDP.

After the election, the CSU formed a sole government under the leadership of Alfons Goppel ( Goppel IV cabinet ).
Goppels challenger, Federal Justice Minister Hans-Jochen Vogel (SPD), decided not to switch to state politics and remained in Chancellor Helmut Schmidt's cabinet .
