The big minus for the "other" in the diagram (−22.7) compared to 1920 can be explained in particular by two factors:
- The Bayerische Mittelpartei / German People's Party with 13.54% no longer competes in this formation. See also National Liberal Reich Party for the VNR.
- The membership of the Independent Social Democratic Party with 12.93% has split several times: see The return of the right wing of the party to the SPD in 1922
consequences
The election campaign was shaped by the Hitler trial . As a result, the extremists won on both sides of the political spectrum: the "Völkische Bloc" made up of the NSDAP and DVFP received 23 seats, and the KPD was able to increase the number of its seats from 2 to 9. The BVP shrank from 65 to 46 seats.
The chairman of the BVP parliamentary group Heinrich Held was elected Prime Minister.
Referendum
Together with the first election day on April 6, 1924, the referendum took place on a far-reaching constitutional amendment. The draft provided for the introduction of a Bavarian President and a second, professionally structured parliamentary chamber. This change had already been proposed by the BVP in the previous state parliament, but had missed the necessary two-thirds majority. In the referendum, with a participation of 70.1%, a majority of 49.3% of those who voted voted against the proposal, 45.4% supported it and 5.3% of the votes cast were invalid.
